I once saw a story about a dad dropping their kid off at their boyfriend/girlfriend’s house with a nugget of timely wisdom: “If you’re not laughing during sex, you’re not doing it right.”
It’s a precious point: to not be self-serious, and remember sex is all about connecting, feeling good, and having fun. But I’m no comedian, so if my dad had said that to me, sex would’ve been more pressure.
My husband, Joe, says I’m not conventionally funny. Humor exists to make people more comfortable with bad things, by subverting expectations. Or so Joe taught me. He thinks that my natural instinct to preemptively solve problems causes me to put jokes inside of a wrapper — protecting the humor from landing to anyone other than myself. But last week, I made him do one of those full-teeth, jaw-dropping laughs while we were starting to get intimate. And, God, it felt good. The successful joke, the shared laughter, and the orgasm.
I love all types of sex: Serious Sex, Emotional Sex, Intense Sex, Angry Sex (which in this relationship is usually an act, to be honest, because I prefer to verbally dissect bad feelings and then have Relief Sex (“please never leave me”)), but that dad wasn’t wrong. Laughter Sex is hot. Like an emotional towel-wringing. Like everyone is even more naked — their should (and teeth) are just as bared as their skin.
